OLYMPIA, Wash.

An initial round of2024 primary election returns will be released around 8 p.m. on Aug. 6 in Washington state.

The returns are from ballots that were turned in early and tabulated. Counties will release additional results in the days after the election as more ballots are counted. Additional results are typically released daily.

KING 5 will provide live updates as returns are counted.

The two top vote-getters during the August primary advance to the November general election.

Governor

Democrat and current state Attorney General Bob Ferguson and Republican challenger and former King County Sheriff and Congress member Dave Reichert advance to the November election.

The governor is elected to a four-year term and is the chief executive officer, making appointments for state positions, including state agency directors. The governor also has the power to sign or veto legislation and submit budget recommendations and reports to the Legislature.

State attorney general

Republican Pete Serrano and Democrat Nick Brown will advance to the general election in November after leading in the August primary following an initial ballot count.

Serrano secured 42% of the vote with Brown trailing with 36% of the vote.

State Sen. Manka Dhingra came up short with 22% of the vote following the initial ballot count.

The state attorney general serves for four years as legal counsel to the governor, members of the Legislature, state officials and state entities. The Office of the Attorney General is tasked with protecting the public by upholding the Consumer Protection Act.

US Senate

Incumbent Maria Cantwell and challenger Raul Garcia will advance to the general election in the U.S. Senate race.

Cantwell has a commanding lead with 58% of the vote in the primary after an initial ballot count on Aug. 6. Garcia was trailing with 22%.

Senators serve six-year terms. The Senate has 100 members, two from each state. The Senate has several exclusive duties, including consenting to treaties, confirming federal appointments made by the president and trying federal officials impeached by the House.

Congressional districts

Though several Congressional candidates had enough of the vote to move onto the November general election following an initial ballot count, some races were still too close to call.

Incumbent Suzan Delbene will move onto the general election in the District 1 race. However, it's unclear who will advance to challenge her.

Democrat Rick Larsen and Republican challenger Cody Hart will advance to the general election in the race for District 2.

Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Joe Kent will advance in the race for District 3.

The race for District 4 is too close to call.

Republican Michael Baumgartner will advance in the race for District 5. It's too close to call who his challenger will be.

The race for District 6 is too close to call.

Incumbent Pramila Jayapal will advance in the race for District 7. It's too close to call who her challenger will be.

Incumbent Kim Schrier and challenger Carmen Goers will advance in the race for District 8.

Democrat incumbent Adam Smith will advance in the race for District 9. It's too close to call who his challenger will be.

Incumbent Marilyn Strickland and Republican challenger Don Hewett will advance to the general election in the race for District 10.

U.S. representatives serve two-year terms. The House has 435 members. Every state has a different number of members based on population. Among their duties, representatives introduce bills and resolutions, offer amendments and serve on committees.

Public lands commissioner

Seven people are in the race to become the next commissioner of public lands.

Whoever is elected in November will replace Hilary Franz, who, after dropping out of the race for governor, chose to run for the 6th Congressional District.

The commissioner of public lands heads the Department of Natural Resources, overseeing the management of more than 5 million acres of state land. The commissioner also manages the state's on-call fire department, which works to prevent and fight wildfires on 13 million acres of private, state and tribal-owned land.

The commissioner serves a four-year term.

Seattle City Council

Alexis Mercedes Rinck and incumbent Tanya Woo will advance to the general election.

Rinck leads Woo with 47% of the vote to 41% of the vote.

Woo was appointed to Position 8 in January after Teresa Mosqueda was elected to the King County Council.

Whoever is elected will serve the remainder of the term.

Position 8 is a citywide position.

Pierce County sheriff

Six candidates are running to replace Sheriff Ed Troyer.

Those candidates include Darin Harris, Craig Gocha, Keith Swank, Cyndie Fajardo, Patti Jackson and Mike Csapo.

The sheriff is the CEO of the Pierce County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff is responsible for overall operation, direction and leadership.

The sheriff serves a four-year term.
